A day in the life of a paranoid individual... Empty A day in the life of a paranoid individual...

Well let's get started shall we?

So I'm unpacking my nice and shiny new hard drive I'm going to be using on this new build. Though of course the inner geek in me compels me to run diagnostics on it to see if the drive is peachy. Like the idiot that I am, went ahead and did what I also do and that's to tinker around inside my desktop on a carpeted surface...which anyone who knows of ESD would be calling me an idiot right now. Everything is fine so far and I'm holding the drive PCB facing my palm...when bzzt I felt a jolt.

Now this is the whole 'oh shit' moment and I looked at the PCB to see the damage...nothing. A perceptible jolt is more than enough to fry the PCB and leave a nice black mark and it was the same as when I took it out of the package. Another odd part was that I was already holding the drive a good couple of seconds before I felt the jolt...which I find strange since don't electrostatic discharges occur within proximal contact...not direct contact? I felt the jolt on my palm that was around a good 1-2" away from the PCB...but the rest of my hand was right on the edges of the drive...shouldn't that make the ESD impossible? Anyway I didn't have much time to ponder this over since I have school so moving along...

So now I'm driving to school and while I am still in my car...I felt another jolt. Okay now this goes beyond bizarre...don't people typically get shocked when they touch the outside door of the car BEFORE you grounded yourself? I'm just sitting nice and pretty in the car and I get zapped...and this was a pretty strong jolt since I felt all tingly after it. Now obviously I shouldn't say this is impossible, this nonetheless this has been the first time such a ridiculous thing has occurred to me.

So after somehow getting that out of my head for the rest of the day...I'm wondering whether I just imagined receiving the jolt under ludicrous circumstances or whether they actually occurred. I wouldn't put it past me to have hallucinated the entire thing given my rather bad luck concerning computer components and their tendency to break whenever I touch them...that and I tend to play with fire often by tinkering inside on a carpeted surface. Nonetheless, the circumstances which these jolts occurred bordered on the impossible...I mean seriously getting jolted while sitting in your car...on the same hand (Right) that was holding the drive?

I know of someone who is pretty much a walking ESD field, but at least the jolt occurs before direct contact is made; not when appendage in question has been holding the item for a good few seconds...I mean I'm not all that knowledgeable on this subject, but wouldn't a current travel through the circuit (least resistance) than jump and form an arc? Though I suppose the human body is a relatively poor conductor?

Anyway this was just something that has been puzzling me all day, and I still think I just imagined that jolt...but what if it causes long-time damaging effects to my shiny new drive? *sigh* The cycle will continue for awhile I suppose? Sad

I have to admit.. i can't tell if you are just paranoid or if u can really sense things around you..
Good luck with that, PimpToad-sama. "That" being the "mystery of the jolt"
makes me wonder, how long was it after you left the machine and got on the car..? it could've probably just been an aftershock or something..
or, maybe u had some metal stuff in your car that, let's suppose, ran current/electricity onto your hand..
ahh.. wait.. that's it.. i just recalled something..
"imagine breaker!"
xDD cheer up! xD

People call it a static shock? It should be the dry season over there after all
